How to fix the ‘Is its parent directory writable by the server?’ error in WordPress

If you go to upload an image and get this error:

Then (generally) all you need to do is remove the custom upload directory under Settings->media:

Note: If you are still getting this issue, then you might have run out of space on your server or have incorrect permissions, in which case please contact your server provider (which might be us!)
